WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police have charged a Cape Fear Community College student after he drove his SUV off a wall at a campus parking deck this morning.

Investigators say Thomas Crowley, 19, was speeding while trying to turn into the Hanover Street deck off N. 3rd St. downtown. They say Crowley missed the entrance and crashed into a wall beside the deck. The crash left Crowley’s car hanging over the wall.

No one was hurt. Police say damage for both the wall and SUV exceed $15,000.

The building next to the Wells Fargo at Shipyard & 17th street and PPD both have some underground parking.

well from the 1st floor top of concrete floor we are exactly 15′ about sea level . I did all the electrical work on the first floor we had to do our own site surveying. they will have to put up signs saying dumb drivers please use bottom floor entrance to ensure a safe entrance into our state of the art parking deck.

Considering the water table in SE NC, an underground parking deck would be more like a pond.

I saw the parking deck being built from the ground up. I actually was one of the electrical on the job. We actually joked about how long it would take for some young college kid to be on his cell phone not paying attention and drive right off the edge and its like a good 16′ drop off that edge and there’s like a 50,000 dollar back up generator right under that wall that would have been bad if that car landed on that not to mention that would have hurt. Good thing the guys built that retaining cables good to keep that car from falling over!

That’s why underground parking is a most welcome benefit for Dumbskees!
Most likely didn’t give their turn signal either :-(

Yes, an underground parking deck is a wonderful idea for an area prone to flooding.
