RALEIGH, NC (CFCC SOCCER) — Cape Fear CC 1 Wake Tech 0. Sergio Esperrago scored in the 60th off an assist by Nathan Pace. Dakota More had 5 saves in goal for the shut-out. Record 9-3-3, 6-2-3 Region Ten. Next game Saturday away at the College of Southern Maryland.

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) – Quarterback Cam Newton says if the Panthers are going to turn things around this season he needs to play better in the second half of games.

The Panthers have held a lead at halftime of all four games this season, but are just 1-3 entering Sunday’s game at Minnesota.

Newton’s numbers in the second half of Carolina’s three losses tell the story of a team that can’t finish and struggles to adjust to halftime changes by opposing defenses. Newton has completed 20 of 40 passes for only 210 yards with only one touchdown and two interceptions, according to STATS INC.

Newton says that the stat is “viable” and “if we are going to make this next step I’m going to have to step up my game in the second half.”

(AP) — Forgive the fans in the Atlantic Coast Conference if they’re leaving games a bit earlier than usual so far this season. With the way many of the matchups have gone, they may as well try to beat the traffic.

Down-to-the-wire games have been tough to find in the ACC. Conference teams have played 56 games, and 44 of them have been decided by at least 10 points.

Florida State hasn’t played a game decided by fewer than 14 points. Maryland’s four wins came by an average of 28 points, and its one loss was by a whopping 63. Clemson’s only nail-biter was in the season-opener against Georgia.

Virginia Tech is the exception to the league rule, going 3-0 so far in games decided by no more than nine points.

BRISTOL, TN (AP) — A person with knowledge of the plans tells The Associated Press that Tennessee and Virginia Tech will play a football game at Bristol Motor Speedway in September 2016.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement is still in the works.

The Bristol Motor Speedway Commission announced plans for a news conference Monday for what it called a major announcement, but gave no details.

The speedway holds 150,000. The attendance record for college football is 115,109, set last month at Michigan Stadium for the Michigan-Notre Dame game.

A Tennessee spokesman says the school could not comment.

HILLSBOROUGH, NC (AP) – The prosecutor involved in an investigation into whether sports agents broke state law by providing gifts to former Tar Heels football players says he expects another grand jury indictment to be unsealed Wednesday.

Jim Woodall, district attorney for Orange County, said Tuesday he expects whoever is charged to make their first court appearance in the afternoon.

Last week, an ex-UNC tutor who worked with football players made her first appearance on charges of providing benefits to receiver Greg Little, now with the Cleveland Browns.

The law requires agents to register with the North Carolina Secretary of State’s office and prohibits offering gifts to entice athletes to sign representation contracts.

The Secretary of State’s office launched its investigation in summer 2010, shortly after the start of an NCAA probe.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Senior Ryan Nagy was named Colonial Athletic Association Golfer-of-the-Week for the second time this season following his top-10 finish at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate earlier in the week.

Nagy opened the tournament with two-over-par-74, but rallied in the final two rounds to earn his first top-10 of the season. He played three-under-par golf in the final two rounds to propel himself from 27th to eighth.

Seahawks conclude the fall portion of their schedule this weekend, Oct. 11-13, when they compete in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tenn.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — With most of the UNCW community preparing to start fall break, Head Coach Adell Harris and members of the 2013-14 UNCW women’s basketball team kept busy on Wednesday as it met with members of the local news media at the program’s annual Media Day.

The team officially opened practice Oct. 5 and continues preparations for its 2013-14 schedule, a 30-game slate that features 14 home games, 13 road contests three neutral-site tilts.

UNCW will play a preseason exhibition contest against UNC Pembroke Nov. 4 in Trask Coliseum before opening the regular season Nov. 9 with a visit to ACC newcomer Notre Dame.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Adam Wainwright pitched a complete game and the St. Louis Cardinals got two-run homers from David Freese and Matt Adams to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 on Wednesday night and advance to the NL championship series.

Wainwright scattered eight hits in his second dominant win of the division series, coming through for the Cardinals in a winner-take-all Game 5.

St. Louis gets to stay at home to open the NLCS against the well-rested Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.

The last three seasons, the Cardinals are 8-1 when facing elimination. They also won Game 5 of the NL division series at Washington last year and at Philadelphia in 2011.
