WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Kenan fountain is a very attractive feature of our city. So attractive, some drivers cannot avoid it.

Tuesday night the second of two lighting companies displayed plans to make the fountain more visible.

This plan involved lights on the fountain as well as across the intersection so drivers could see the base more clearly.

The Wilmington City Council will discuss the two options.

Whiteville has a courthouse in the middle of an intersection. I don’t recall ever hearing about anyone running into it. Granted, it’s a lot larger, but it is still susceptible to drunk drivers.

Paint it with Blacklight paint…and “1 Bulb” should do it.
    Total cost…$37.42

    LOL- LOVE IT !!!!

Why not close the 5th street crossover by installing continuous median along the Market street median. This would also eliminate all of the illegal left turn accidents at this intersection.

Berger isn’t part of city council. Try New Hanover County Commissioner.

Why it was ever put in the middle of the road is a mystery to me. Maybe in horse and buggy days it made more sense. If you are in the inside lane, going around it and somebody crowds you on the right, chances of hitting it greatly increase. Maybe some day, a large truck will take the whole thing out and they can pile the rubble in front of City Hall and let Saffo, and all the members of the City Council take turns holding a flashlight on it at night. Count Berger out, as he would not show up.

The Mayor and council never cease to amaze with the ways they waste taxpayer funds. If you do not want something run into……move it out of the middle of the road.

All of those expensive new lights should make it easier to see when drivers drunkenly run into it. Personally, I always found it to be highly visible as long as I had my eyes open.

Congratulations to city “leaders” for finding yet one more way to pour taxpayer dollars down the drain.

This fountain is beautiful and has been there for a long time. Why should it be moved of knocked down because a handful of people can’t “see” it? Not like it is small. Remove THEM from driving on our roads! anyone who runs into a huge fountain need their license taken from them.
I pass this way often and have never once day or night had a problem with the fountain.
You people can find something more important to complain about then lights on a fountain because a few people could save the city money by not texting and driving, drinking and driving, daydreaming or whatever else they may be doing that causes them to run into something so large and easily seen. If they would drive with their car lights on at night there would be no need to add lights to the lovely fountain.
