PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A woman who had access to money for a cancer charity is now accused of stealing it.
The Pender County Sheriff's Office says Wendy Purdue stole thousand of dollars from the American Cancer Society.
According to the Relay for Life of New Hanover County's Facebook page, the charity is shocked and saddened by this news.
According to the Pender County Sheriff's Office Purdue, who worked for the ACS, opened a bank account last year under the society's Relay for Life name, but the organization never authorized the account.
Deputies arrested Purdue this morning after they say she embezzled $68,000 over 10 months. Purdue is charged with 10 counts of embezzlement. She is out of jail on $60,000 bond.
In a statement, the American Cancer Society says it has zero tolerance for financial impropriety of any kind and is working closely with law enforcement.
"We will do everything we can to recover any dollars stolen," the group said. "Services for cancer patients and their families have not and will not be impacted."
Purdue has not returned a message for comment.
