New Hanover Commissioners support median project

READ MORE:

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover County Commissioners have thrown their support behind a plan aimed at making Market Street safer.

Commissioners today voted to support NCDOT efforts to get money to build landscaped medians on Market between MLK Parkway and Station Rd. and between Middle Sound Loop Rd. and Mendenhall Dr./Marsh Oaks Dr.

Similar medians have been planned from Marsh Oaks to Porters Neck.

The project is part of the Market Street Corridor Study, which is focused on improving safety and traffic flow along the 11-mile stretch of Market from Colonial Dr. to the Pender County line.

Leland's U-Turns

The U-turns in Leland on Village Road may be aggravating to some, but they were needed and I fully applaud the DOT for installing! I used to be so afraid going through that area because of the "chicken lane" mentality. People took unnecessary chances jumping out to the middle in front of traffic from every business entrance. Now, there is control and traffic moves more smoothly and safely. The planted medians are a nice green touch and I enjoy living in a little town that prides itself on something more than asphalt.

The same traffic issues are happening on Carolina Beach Road between Greenfield Lake and Shipyard Blvd. I think this stretch would be a good candidate for this same type of structure.

Whenever I'm close to being

Whenever I'm close to being in an accident, it's usually at an intersection where people are making U-turns, which is what these medians will create. They don't read and understand the sign that says "U-Turn Yield to Right Turn". They're in too much of a hurry and just whip their car around the median. I know a few places along Market that could use a stop light to help break-up traffic flow and slow people down so it's more safe for drivers to pull out.

Hey AY!

How about doing some investigative reporting and find out who's going to pay the upkeep? Hint... it's not the DOT. You can bet the perpetual maintenance will cost local taxpayers a fortune.

How

.. is this going to make it safer? There are way too many business entrances to make this idea feasible. They are going to force people to flock to the nearest opening in the median and make u-turns.. and they think this is safer? I've lived along the Market St. Corridor for over 20 years and the majority of the accidents are rear-enders. How is this going to help?

I have an idea. How about our County Commissioners just sit in their offices and don't say or do anything until we get the chance to vote them out!

They will probably do like

They will probably do like Hwy 17 in Leland and put in those aggravating "Michigan u-turns."

Market St medians

Landscaped medians would take away turning lanes and decrease the lanes for straightaway traffic. The landscape medians could be beautiful but at a sacrifice for continuing traffic. The street is so narrow that it wouldn't be feasible until Market widens past the MLK/Eastwood intersection.

They can screw it up

They can screw it up like they have in Leland. Enforce the traffic laws and you will see it safer.
