BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — Food stamp recipients will see additional changes to their benefit amounts in coming months, with an increase in October followed by a decrease in November.

The program’s annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will provide an increase in the amount of benefits program recipients see, effective October 1, 2013. But reductions will follow, a result of the loss of funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which was put in place in 2009. The part of the law that allowed increases was limited to five years, expiring November 1, 2013.

The decision for the reduction is based solely on federal requirements and the local office has no control over the amount of reductions.

“In other words, people will see an increase in benefits in October, but then see a reduction in November,” said Cathy Lytch, Director of Social Services. “We know this reduction will create a hardship, which is why we want people to be aware that there will be a decrease, so they can plan ahead.”

Brunswick County Social Services administers the Simplified Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps. The program has seen several changes recently, including an online application system called ePASS, available at epass.nc.gov, which is tied to the new NC FAST computer system.
Food stamp benefits are issued automatically on an EBT card monthly. The system will determine the reduction amount for each case. Brunswick County’s Social Services office will not be involved with processing the October increases or November decreases.

Recipients are encouraged to call the EBT call center at 1-866-719-0414 on their benefit issuance date to find out how much is on their card.

“We want people to realize it is not a glitch in the system, nor a decision made locally,” Lytch added.

fighting cancer not lazy!
2015 years 9 months ago

I am a mother of 2, was diagnosed a year ago with stage 4 rectal cancer, which keeps spreading and spreading. I would LOVE to be cancer free and be back in the office, however for me I am not able. I do not have much longer of a life expectancy, so the food stamps do help my children and I eat. I get 700 in disability, and some money from the children’s father which helps with bills, rent, school needs for my 5 yr old, an not too mention chemo, allll the meds i have to buy, and the 3 to 4 appointments I have a week for cancer, and multiple sclerosis. Then my chemotherapy I am hospitalized each time for a few days due to the reactions I have to it. So not everyone on food stamps are lazy people looking for a hand out, I am 24 yrs old and never expected to be diagnosed with 2 deadly illnesses at the age of 23. So I can only imagine how hard it is for anyone that is older than me and whose bodies are weaker than mine. My body is much weaker now from the aggressive chemo and radiation and surgeries I have had to endure. It is upsetting that so many people tell other to “GET A JOB” . OHHH how I’d love to trade places with someone with the health to work. So what do ya say? Would you like to battle stage 4 cancer and multiple sclerosis, or go to work? I’d love to be at work, but obviously God has another plan for me so please stop being so judgmental!!

Great post Guest!!!! Funny that my cant ha was vocal minority!!!! Lol!!!!

Hey Guest Man, please educate yourself a little, quit being so close minded and unenlightened. Conservatives, including tea party members, give far more (in total as well as per capita) to charities than liberals. Have you ever looked at Joe Biden’s tax return? It’s absolutely shameful. Something else you may want to consider, if you are open minded enough, don’t the people who are perpetually dependent on the government also have something to add to society? Why should society be robbed of their special skills and talents? Or do you consider them to be too pitiful, too incompetent, and must be taken care of like little babies? Conservatives believe in the value of every individual, and we expect everyone, who is physically/mentally able of course, to take responsibility for themselves and to contribute to the greater good of our country. Dependency leads to slavery, and we all know the Democratic track record on that issue.

I believe every responsible American is proud to help those that are unfortunate and need help to get back on their feet, but I can assure you that the responsible Americans are sick and tired of supporting the perpetual generation after generation of lazy, money sucking individuals that don’t have the accountability or responsibility to go to work in an effort to support their own children and family!

This goes well beyond your “loaves of Bread” and a “Fish now and then” my fickle friend! This extends to free cell phones, free food, free housing and free medical care! The responsible citizens pay out of every check, to give, every pay period, while the lazy (and the illegal that never paid into anything) receive and feel empowered for more! The sad part is, there’s no appreciation, only a sense of “Where my gubbmint check be?” Have you seen the news of EBT card holders that ripped off the taxpayers due to a software glitch? THEY knew better. The sad part is that Walmart knew better too, but their dollar was far too important to take a simple action! Another taxpayer expense…imagine that? Tell me more about the TAKERS, OK?

This IS becoming about “every man and himself” because the working man produces, is responsible, accountable and yet gets behind. The lazy do nothing and get the same, if not better benefits.

You can call it “tea-bagger” all you want, that’s fully insignificant and your pitiful excuse. It’s simply about responsibility, accountability. Get up and stand for a purpose here if you want to spout off. Right now, you don’t have one! Could I get you some cheese for your whine?

How about I help to take care of those who I know are in need rather than giving my money to the government for them to waste most of it before handing it out to those who may be in need. More people would get better help from their fellow man than they get from the government. The thing is that as long as the government takes my money, I don’t have enough to help others. Liberals seem to only believe in compassion as long as someone else pays for it.

I work six days a week in a factory and if it weren’t for my food stamps, my kids wouldn’t eat. I barely eat just so they can eat. Its not a handout for me. I actually need this help.

How many of the SNAP,EBT,WIC and the other multitudes of “handout” programs have considered work???

not your average sterotype
2015 years 9 months ago

I am really tired of the sterotypes. Some of us that NEED these benefits do work. Some of us have college degrees. The field of work I am in charges the clients an arm and a leg and pay us less than a fast food employee. Dont think that everyone that recieves help is lazy. I put in my 40 hrs a week. I am greatful for the help I get and glad that it helps me provide a better life for my children

Seriously? How about if the deadbeats went out and worked like I do every day to provide for my family? Makes me sick to my stomach….

2015 years 9 months ago

Hey some of these deadbeats you are referring to do get up and work but still need help maybe one day you will join the deadbeats for judging people.

It’s a shame that not so much as the healthy adults that are going to suffer. But the children and the elderly, that sometimes those kids depend on FS and school lunches as thier only food to eat.

2015 years 9 months ago

…go to work and put forth an effort to feed their own children AND IF we would stop feeding the millions of illegal aliens that sneak into our country and suck off the system, there would be plenty to go around for those that truly need this benefit! Hard to believe we actually PAY illegal aliens to invade our country, rape our tax system, then we reward them with free healthcare, housing and food. “Awwww…it’s alright Ms. Hernandez, just vote for ME during the upcoming election. We’ll take care of you and your new family comfortably here in the US!”

Just like every other government handout, it’s a monkey cage of misuse, abuse and greed for the lazy and inept that’s poorly managed by who? Yeppir…your reliable government agencies!

Oh and by the way! Don’t worry about those poor pitiful Pakistani’s and Afgani’s that hate America’s guts while we continue to send them BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars in aid! Just a reminder…

Now…you really wanna talk about shame? Game on!

In parks there are signs warning folks not to feed bears because the bears will lose their fear of humans and then start to expect food handouts and won’t try to get their own food.

Why are we feeding the human bears?

2015 years 9 months ago

…because the bears will eventually give up and go forage for food when the hand-feeding stops. The Amoebas simply dry up and die because they are fully incapable of helping themselves when the time comes (let’s advance 10,000 subgenus, genus, species and call it a “deer in the headlights” reaction). We can’t let THAT happen!

Responsibility and accountability for the individual citizen are governmental “bad words” these days (unless of course, you’re one of us that happens to have taxation liability!).

food stamp recipients get a cost of living increase? and just had an increase expire from the reinvestment act?? now please some enlightened liberal explain how is that stimulus? And how can the administration even keep a straight face any more? It is like a bad stand up act.
I did not see any stimulus and I am one of the poor shmucks paying for it.
When is this insanity going to stop?, can anyone tell me? please hurry because I am running out of money at an alarming rate you know it is expensive when you pay for your own housing, transportation, utilities, food and clothing and on top of that I have to pay medical expenses.

Imagine if everyone did that? wow what a concept everyone pulling their own weight how long do you think it would take to pay off the debt from payroll taxes alone?
And besides working sixty hours a week and giving 40% to the government and insurance companies is a real pain in the neck.

2015 years 9 months ago

Imagine a concept where everyone that could, pulled their own weight and the more fortunate helped the less fortunate. Imagine if everyone had their own loaves and fishes moments when everyone pulled together for the common good.
I think that would be a lot better than every man for himself and to hell with anybody else.
I don’t think I like the tea-bagger way.

hummmmmmm if all these needy folks get a cost of living raise.. where is mine for the working person? I think hard work should be rewarded NOT pure damn laziness. GET A JOB!
