MOYOCK, N.C. (AP) - One of four monkeys that escaped from a private home in Currituck County has died after being tranquilized.
The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reports (http://bit.ly/HzjMwM) that authorities confirmed Friday that one of the monkeys died.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Lindsay Voorhees says the capuchin monkeys escaped from a home at about 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
Currituck County Sheriff Susan Johnson says the animals' owner said they would become vicious if cornered. Two nearby schools were alerted that extra deputies would be on hand around dismissal time to ensure the children safely got on buses.
One of the monkeys bit a man, but Voorhees says his injuries weren't life-threatening.
Vorhees said one of the monkeys was shot with a shotgun but survived. She said all three surviving monkeys are being held in quarantine.
