Officials dispose of dynamite in Anson County

READ MORE:

WADESBORO, N.C. (AP) - Officials have disposed of what Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen called "a large quantity" of dynamite discovered in a barn this week.

The Charlotte Observer reports (http://bit.ly/1dZiJ7P) that local and federal officials spent much of Friday disposing of the explosives, which were found by a man in a barn in the southern part of the county.

Authorities say the man's father died recently, and the man's son was cleaning out the barn on the farm.

According to Allen, the man reported the discovery to the sheriff's office and personnel from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms joined deputies in disposing of the explosives.

Allen said that decades ago, farmers sometimes used dynamite to remove tree stumps in fields. They would store the dynamite in their barns.
