CONCORD, NC (WWAY) — WWAY NewsChannel 3 has won Best Newscast in North Carolina in the NC Associated Press Broadcast Awards. The station also took home top honors for weather and sports and several other categories from the AP. In all WWAY won 19 awards from the AP and the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas, which were given out at the RTDNAC annual conference at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord.
Other top news awards for WWAY include Best Spot News, General News and Best Enterprise/Investigative. WWAY’s political coverage won three awards, including top honors from RTDNAC for election coverage for the second year in a row. Coverage of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte won an award from RTDNAC and AP.
Chief Meteorologist Jerry Jackson won Best Weather Reporting from the Associated Press, while “Good Morning Carolina” meteorologist Tim Buckley won an honorable mention. The StormTrack 3 Weather Team’s hurricane special “Blood in the Water: The Expedition Hurricane of 1861″ won the News Documentary category from RTDNAC.
WWAY’s high school football highlight show “5th Quarter” won the AP’s Best Sportscast. The show also won second place for Best Sports Special from RTDNAC.
