Thousands flock to opening weekend of the Cape Fear Fair and Expo

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- From animals to delicious fried delights, and of course rides for kids of all ages and sizes, this year's Cape Fear Fair and Expo is fun for everyone.

Jennifer Kaczynski and her daughter came to the fair to have a girl’s day out.

"Well we came out to spend some mother daughter time, checking out the animals, riding the rides, and eating bad food,” Kaczynski said.

Kaczynski says when it comes to fair food, her sweet tooth takes over. We wanted to know her favorite guilty pleasure.

“Probably the sweets,” she said. “Cotton candy, fried dough."

But her daughter Sophia was more interested in the animals, especially the horses.

"I really like horses, so I asked my mom if we could go see them and she said yes,” Sophia said.

Another fair fan says he comes back year after year to enjoy the rides.

"We're having a blast here at the fairport,” Shawn Lavelle said. “We've been riding all the rides, and just having a blast."

And one ride in particular caught his eye. He says the fire truck ride is his favorite.

Fair manager Skip Watkins says more than 7,000 people came to the fair so far this weekend, and he expects at least 5,000 more attendees today alone.

So, what can fans expect from the fair this week?

"Tuesday we have a cheerleading competition which is always a big one from all the area high schools,” Watkins explained. “We also have live bands performing throughout. And obviously, next Friday night we have Midnight Madness."

Events sure to make lasting memories, something Sophia says is one the reasons she loves the fair.

“We have good memories and we've been here a couple times,” she said. “And my brother and me both win stuff all the time, and it’s fun."

Tickets to the fair are 20 dollars, or you can purchase a five dollar walk around ticket Monday through Thursday if you're not a fan of the rides.

This year's fair runs through Sunday, Nov. 10.
