Homes evacuated after gas leak near 17th, Princess and Chestnut
 

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Firefighters evacuated several homes this afternoon because of a gas leak near Princess St. and Chestnut St. in Wilmington.

The fire department says crews were cleaning a storm drain around 12:30 p.m. when they heard a hissing sound and smelled gas. WFD says the leak is in a manhole in an alley between Princess and Chestnut near 17th St.

The fire department evacuated about one block of homes around the area as a precaution.

Crews were able to fix the leak around 1:45 p.m.
