FAIR BLUFF, NC (WWAY) -- A candidate for Fair Bluff Town Commissioner has died of an apparent heart attack on Election Day, according to the town's mayor.
Mayor Randy Britt says Mike Hammond was at the polls today when he started having problems. Britt, who is also running for a commissioner seat, says Hammond went home, and eventually an ambulance came to take him to the hospital in Whiteville. Britt says Hammond apparently had a heart attack on the way to the hospital and died.
Hammond finished fourth in the race for three commission seats. His brother Billy won the town's election for mayor.
