Teachers stage walk-in protest at board meeting

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) -- Close to 200 teachers squeezed into the Brunswick County School Board meeting to hold a silent protest.

Teachers wore red clothing to protest education reformed passed by the North Carolina General Assembly.

The board allowed many teachers to air their concerns during the public portion of their meeting, much of which centered around teacher pay.

“It's very important that we as educators to do as we teach our students to make sure their voices are heard and acknowledged and important action takes place. It's the same thing for public education,” said Brunswick County Teacher of the Year Elizabeth Williamson.

Each board member took the time to tell the teachers their message is being heard loud and clear, and that they would try to find ways to get pay up to a competitive level.
