Battleship NC gets $1M donation for preservation effort

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Battleship North Carolina announced a $1 million dollar donation today from the Duke Energy Foundation.

The money will go toward repairing the the ship's hull and helping preserve the state's World War II memorial.

The power company says it views the donation as an investment.

"For Duke Energy, we think the battleship is important to the eastern North Carolina community," Duke Energy Executive Vice President Lloyd Yates said. "Duke Energy can only be successful if the communities we serve are successful, and we think this is a significant investment for the overall success of this area, and consequently will make duke successful."

In 2009 the Department of the Navy said that the USS North Carolina Battleship Commission needed to develop a repair plan or plan for the eventual disposal of the ship. This donation part of the plan to preserve the Battleship and expand the complex and programs.
