Brigade Boys & Girls Club leading vote for $50,000 grant

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Brigade Boys & Girls Club is in the lead in a nationwide vote to win a $50,000 grant through Lincoln Financial Services. The Brigade is one of 10 national finalists as well as the only non-profit in North Carolina and the only Boys & Girls Club in the finals.

As of Monday morning, the organization that serves more than 1,300 kids in New Hanover and Pender counties had 30.5 percent of the vote for the Lincoln's Legacy Award. City Year Sacramento (CA) is in second place with 18.5 percent.

The voting continues through Dec. 4. Only one winner is selected based on who gets the most votes.

The Lincoln's Legacy Award will recognize and invest in nonprofit organizations whose principles and programs advance Abraham Lincoln’s legacy of freedom and opportunity through education.

The Brigade is up against nine other non-profits, mostly from large metro-areas such as Chicago, Houston, Boston, Sacramento and Washington, DC. The Brigade's project is to support Project Learn, its after-school homework program.
