Global warming could be affecting area fisheries

READ MORE:

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- In North Carolina fishing is a multi-million dollar industry, but researchers say climate change is turning into a fishy situation off our coast.

Dr. Daniel Pauly has been studying the effects of global warming on our fisheries for the past decade and says we need to make a change before it’s too late.

“Fish are moving toward the poles because it's getting too warm for them,” said Dr. Daniel Pauly. “Many of the traditional fishing areas of these fish, and also fishing ground, are no longer what they were."

Dr. Daniel Pauly says he first heard the term global warming in 1989. Since that time he has studied its effect on over 30,000 fish species, and has come to a terrifying realization.

"This system has spread over time off shore and into deeper waters,” said Dr. Pauly. “This expansion fools us into thinking that things are fine because the market is supplied but actually it is more and more difficult to supply the market."

In North Carolina many game fish are regulated to ensure the long term vitality of the species. Dr. Pauly says this is a model that commercial fisherman worldwide need to sink their hooks into.

"The US is a country that manages its fisheries very well, at least in comparison with other countries, and stocks are bouncing back,” said Dr. Pauly. “Fishing is reduced so that it can bounce back. This is an example that must be followed in other countries."

But before you set sail searching for your favorite game fish along the Carolina Coast, Dr. Pauley wants to remind you that the future of the fish markets could depend on your catch and release.

"We don't want to have super profits in the short term we want to have the fishery maintained,” said Dr. Pauley. “That requires sometimes, and quite often, fishing less.

Global Warming?

They did not get the memo...it is NO LONGER called Global Warming!
It is now "Climate Change".... cause the planet is no longer in a warming trend.
In order to fit the political agenda though we now complain that if it gets hot or cold its somehow mans fault.
History of the planet and previous climate changes are to be ignored.

Warming Climate

First of all, the earth is not cooling but I won't even get into that b/c this is likely a religious style belief. More realistically, the earth is not like a roast beef in the oven heating up at the same rate all over. For instance I live near Alb. NY where the average annual temp reached 50 degrees for the first time since 1895 in 1990, again in 1998, 2006 and for the last 3 years in row. The Gulf of Maine has increased in temp by 3 to 5 degrees and has caused real changes in the fishing industry (no more cod lots more lobsters). This is a common development in this region. This isn't theory and you can say it's a coincidence but a the risk of being a fool you can't argue with the thermometer. Also, most of the earth is water and most of the added heat is being absorbed in the oceans. It is true that these effects are not as evident in NC and the South in general but here in the NE the changes and the warming are obvious and measurable, period.

Global Warming and fisheries

I cant believe we are still on this global warming thing. In case you haven't been studying, the temperature has not risen in the past 15 years. And the polar ice caps that were supposed to disappear in 2013 have actually grown! Global warming is another tactic to line the pockets of others. I'm not saying global warming is an impossibility. I AM SAYING that presently...it's not happening. Nothing about global warming HAS happened. Right now, it's not a fact. It's a theory. It's not a truth.

Global Warming?

Global warming? Every model indicates global cooling for the last 3 decades. This professor obviously isn't after grouper, he's fishing for a government grant.

yes global warming

If you take out the El Nino years of 1997 and 1998 the rend is still for warming.
Those 2 years alone threw the 20 to 30 year trend off.
Of course deniers will cherry pick any info they want to prove their point.
Take a look at the trends over the last 20 centuries and you'll see that yes indeed, in spite of the last 20 to 30 years the earth is in fact, warming.

Given the time frames involved I won't be here when the "tipping point" is reached and I don't give a darn as to whether it's man made or not - global warming and cooling happen.

Vog

Drink the koolaid!

As if 20 or 30 years of "studies" by university flacks who depend on govt grants can be used to indicate anything. In the 70s you types were warning about a coming "Ice Age" so what happened to that kook theory? It got transplanted with the global "warming" scam. Your FACTS are lies built upon fraud science and cherry picking of data. The industrial age started around 1900 and yet you goggle eyed global warming types think 100 years can destroy a planet that has been floating around for billions of years. Keep drinking the koolaid and when Obama says your car/home/land/hobby/wife/boyfriend/pets/whatever he decides are ruining the planet he will ban/regulate/tax/ them too.

It gets better

The World Meteorological Organization has just released the latest temperature study that shows that last year was one of the HOTTEST years on record globally.
Does a year REALLY mean anything? Nope not when you are talking global warming that takes place over hundreds or thousands of years.
But what it DOES do is this. If you add last year to your pathetic 20 to 30 year argument that he earth is cooling then it completely obliterat.es the data to show an actual warming trend over the last 31 years.
Any argument that restricts itself to 20 to 30 to even a 100 years when talking climate change is a stupid argument in the grand scheme of global warming/cooling.
The study is not political - it is science. all it is are measurements, temperature readings.
Your argument that the earth is actually cooling over the last 30 years is now completely false if you add last years temps to the discussion.
Like I said - climate does change. It takes hundreds of thousands of years - it warms and cools and has been dong so since time began. I don't care if man added to it or not - it just happens.
Your Kool aid just turned sour Jamie

Vog

Total hogwash and lies.

This pswedo "science" is based on how many years of data collection? 20 or 30? The earth is BILLIONS of years old, and for some govt grant dependent flack to claim scientific "proof" by a extrapolating over such a miniscule time period is pure garbage. Global warming is a scam perpetrated by global elites who want MORE CONTROL over your lives. If you think driving an SUV has any effect over the incredibly vast and complex fish population, you also think you can keep your doctor under Obamacare.

science you say

At least you realize the earth is billions of years old and you probably know that it didn't always have this comfortable oxygenated atmosphere (and someday won't). Maybe you also know that the atmosphere, relatively speaking, is thinner than the skin of a apple and the part important to us is even thinner. The man-made effects of affecting the atmosphere with fossil fuels is rally a little more than 100 yrs but for some reason you don't seem to understand that it's not the SUV it's the COAL. One coal fired generator (I think its in Georgia) is the equivalent of 3,000,000 cars.

I guess you think we can put as much of anything we want in the air and it won't bother you. You're not the only one who lives here, grow up.

Crappy management of resources

What a dolt, anyone who fishes knows that commercial interest have nearly destroyed recreational fishing in NC, All you have to do is look at other states--- it is not rocket science.

Global Warming Effect on Fisheries

DollarDivots, you hit the nail right on the head! Inshore netting has ruined the fisheries for sure.

You Bet - and by the way,

You Bet - and by the way, Obamacare is going to be great too.
