WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Although Wilmington’s mayoral race was uncontested, there was more than 500 write-in votes. Among those man about town Ricky Meeks led the way with 73.

Meeks, who is no stranger to the ballot, also got nine votes for City Council.

He says his heart was not in this race and that he and Mayor Bill Saffo have a long-standing friendship.

“I told him off the record,” Meeks said, “I said, ‘I don’t want to run against you, because I do not want to mix blood with family,’ so you don’t mess with Saffos.”

Meeks says he plans to run for New Hanover County Commission next year. He says the only thing that may stop him is his health.
