ANSON COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Officers are looking for the owner of a white, mid-size car after a Brunswick County man was found shot to death in Anson County.

They believe that driver stopped at the scene, thinking it was a car accident, and may have talked to the suspect.

The sheriff today called it a “whodunnit.”

The call originally came in as a car in a ditch, but when a deputy arrived around 8:30 p.m., he found Keith Jerome Whisnant, 42, of Ocean Isle Beach, with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Investigators say Whisnant was traveling to Johnson City, TN.

The Anson County Sheriff said surveillance video showed Whisnant alone at 8 p.m. at a Wadesboro Burger King.

“We talked to several people, and one of which did come by the scene and saw the vehicle in the ditch and appeared to by two individuals in the front seat in some sort of a tussle or something,” Sheriff Tommy Allen said.

Allen says Whisnant was killed at 8:30 p.m., so investigators believe he must have met the mystery passenger in the half hour before the shooting.

Investigators say there was no sign of a second person at the scene. They do not know if he may have been picked up by a passing vehicle.

I feel so sorry for this family. However being from Anson. Co. I can say that is the worst police and sheriffs department that could ever be. I am totally ashamed to say that I grew up there. Drugs are overwhelming and the crime rate is very high. The police are worried more about alcohol than the meth and cocaine. Of course it’s all about who you know or how much money you have. I pray that they find out who killed this innocent man. Yes Mr. Allen it is a who done it. So get your head out of your behind and find out!!!’
