RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) -- A Kure Beach hero has been honored for saving a life.

Memorial Day weekend a correctional officer on vacation helped save a man from drowning.

Ronald Houston of Duplin County received a Governor's Award for Excellence this week.

Back in May Houston noticed three swimmers stuck in rip currents. Two lifeguards with floatation devices rescued the two women. Then Houston, who did not have a float, saved the man and brought him to shore.
