Thanks everybody. It has been a time of great new beginnings for me here. From starting in weather back in 2005 to my move to the anchor desk. I had a chance to meet so many people covering weather and news.

Wilmington has been a wonderful home and I will miss many people here, in Southport, Carolina and Kure Beaches.

TV is a mobile business, like a sports team many people come and go under the station banner. WWAY will continue to grow through change and challenges and will endure as a place where many will begin a career in TV and some will remain long enough to become familiar.

I will miss you all.

Chris Phillips

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A familiar face is leaving us soon in the name of romance.

Chris Phillips, our co-anchor and former chief meteorologist, is moving to the Columbia, SC, area to be closer to his fiancee Roberta. They plan to marry in 2014.

Chris is one of the most talented on-air people I’ve ever worked with. He can talk about anything for as long as you need him to during a newscast. Plus he’s incredibly witty to boot.

I know I will be joined by thousands of people in Southeastern North Carolina who will be sad to see him go and will miss his charm and talent. It was a great opportunity for this television station to be able to bring Chris back to anchor in 2010.

Chris’s last day on-air will be the day before Thanksgiving, Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Chris – good luck, thank you for all that you did for WWAY, and we wish you and Roberta nothing but the best together!

  • Lori says:

Chris…we all hate to see you go!! Wishing you the best of luck, and if you can, put some ” wedding” pictures on Facebook for all of us to see, with Roberts’ permission of course. Best Wishes to you both! Have fun in SC!!

  • Lori L. Morris says:

Chris, I’m sorry to hear that you are leaving, but I’m happy for you and wish you all the best with your upcoming marriage and new job. I know you will be successful in whatever you do and I have very much enjoyed watching you do the weather and news. I am also glad to have gotten to meet you. You will be missed.

  • George says:

We’re sorry to see Chris leave. We enjoyed his news anchor style. We also had the pleasure of meeting Chris by chance at The Basics downtown when we were having dinner there. Good Luck.

  • PublicAvenger says:

I agree. You did a very good job here. The Port City is losing one of the best.

  • Julie says:

We will miss you in Wilmington Chris (a little bit of Cuban flavor in the news), but you and Roberta need to be together. It is wonderful that you are able to follow her to SC. I worked with Roberta at FH and miss her too, but I am happy for both of you. Wishing you the best always. Congratulations!

  • Karen Narusewicz says:

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Was sad to see you go the first time, now it’s happening again! Gonna miss you but good luck in the next chapter in your life! :(

  • marissa bennett says:

Im sad to hear you are leaving the wwaytv3 staff.
I wish you luck on your upcoming wedding. You will be missed.

  • Paula K. says:

I watch WWAY just for the professionalism of all who work there. Chris, I will miss your smiling face. Best of luck in your future!

  • Guest2020 says:

Good luck, Chris. Everyone in my household will miss you. I can’t remember a news anchor or meteorologist that I enjoyed more.

  • ChefnSurf says:

Met you in person on more than one occasion in a gym we both shared. On every occasion, you we’re not only polite, but outgoing. Have interacted several times with you via emails. On every occasion you we’re an intelligent and humorous respondent. On air, you’ve always been professional while at the same time being able to come up with the occasional humorous add lib.

To put it succinctly: A good guy leaves Wilmington.

(Oh yea, I believe I heard you were a boater. You’re sure not going to need it in Columbia. I can help you by taking it off your hands on the cheap. Of course the only reason I would do this is just to help a “good guy” move more easily.)

    Chef :-)

  • Lynn Watson says:

We wish Chris and Roberta best wishes and blessings in their marriage. We hate to see him leave, as we met him when he first came to WWAY, and we were the storm trackers from Oak Island and saw him several times in Southport. He has been a wonderful Meteorologist and Anchor and will be missed!

  • Guest2929 says:

    Bye. Good luck.

  • Emma Ross says:

I remembered Chris Phillips for chanel 14 in Charlotte. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered him on WWAY after I retired and moved back to the coast. Will miss you Chris and wish you well

  • kingstonman says:

It is very sad to hear you are leaving us Chris. While I wish you the best in your upcoming marriage I can’t imagine anyone coming close to replacing you. You and Jerry Jackson are the reason I watch the WWAY evening newscast and weather.
I hope WWAY looks strong and hard to get someone of your caliber as a replacement. Can’t imagine that person being found but hopefully there is someone out there.
Goodbye and maybe someday you and your bride would like to return to Wilmington?

  • GuestUSMC says:

That’s right, Chris…you stay and bring her here. Guest-O-Matic is completely correct describing the conditions in Columbia, SC.

  • Guest Reply Redux says:

No…it’s worser in the Amazon…but I don’t think they’ll marry and go there. If humidity was a concern for Chris & wife to be…they’d move to Arizona or Nevada :-) 5% to 7% during daylight hours…and 105 in the Summer, beats 92 degrees with 85% humidity…hands down.

  • Guest Reply Redux says:

As long as it takes, to keep the attention off of Tuesday’s election results…HA!!!

  • 11221 says:

Are you going to run this as the lead everyday for over two weeks like you did when a female left your station not to long ago. Probably not!! Only time will tell.

  • Guest-o-matic says:

…Columbia is one of the hottest, most stagnant, no breeze, high humidity environments you can possibly come across in this region! You both would like much better here!

Thanks for always bringing a smiling face to WWAY TV3 over the years with your weather forecasting and as an Anchor! You will be missed by many!

  • watcher says:

Oh no Chris! Can’t Roberta move to Wilmington?! We will miss you – one of the BEST newscasters I’ve ever seen & heard! You are a calm & comforting presence, at the desk, doing the weather & out in the community around people! Wish you happiness!

  • John Hinnant says:

There’s a great line in Good Will Hunting where the Robin Williams’ character says, “I gotta go see about a girl”. Safe travels Chris. Its been a pleasure to work with a top notch professional. You will be missed.
