WPD: Heroin marked ‘Champs’ leads to multiple overdoses

WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — Wilmington Police have connected a specific brand of heroin to a number of local drug overdoses.

A joint drug investigation between the Wilmington Police Department and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has lead law enforcement to a local suspect and multiple drug over-doses.

Last night around 8:30 pm on Kornegay Avenue Wilmington Police arrested 32 year old Kendrick Davis of Wilmington. Davis is charged with Trafficking Heroin, Possession With Intent to Sell and Deliver Heroin and Selling & Delivering Heroin within 1000 ft of a Childcare Facility. Police seized 150 bindles of Heroin from Davis. Each bindle was stamped with the name “Champs”.

Investigators have received more than a dozen calls in the past few days regarding drug overdoses linked to heroin stamped with the name “Champ”. No deaths have been linked to the drug at this time.

Police are sharing this information with the hope of preventing any drug related deaths. Individuals with information about the sell or use of illegal drugs are asked to call the Wilmington Police Department at 910-343-3609, use Text-a-Tip at “Tip708″ or call Crime stoppers at 1-800-531-9845.

    The recent crackdown on pills is driving users to street heroin, which is cheap and potent this year thanks to record harvests in Afghanistan. Expect all these recent round ups of minor pill sellers to lead to many, many more heroin ODs

    Prohibition is an absolute plague The real problem; the system that grants exclusive distribution rights to violent cartels, street gangs, most definitely is the problem. Legalize it, regulate it, make it safer.
