WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Employees at a Wilmington call center are outraged after they say they were lied to then laid off.
Just two weeks before Christmas, a Wilmington business has closed, apparently leaving workers high and dry.
Now, employees are without a job, and some without their final paychecks.
Delaware-based eshowings set up home showing appointments for realtors and was used by realty companies in Wilmington up until 6 p.m. Monday.
Night shift manager Cara Morgan says her General Manager Tomy Kot told her Monday at 3 p.m. that the Wilmington office would not be closing.
Within hours employees said they got the call that the company and the Wilmington office were shutting down.
Morgan says Kot told her over the phone that employees should not expect any pay for their last week of work.
“It’s not right, and I don’t understand why you can’t pay,” Morgan said. “If you can spend $10,000 last month, you can pay the people that worked this last week for the company.”
Now employees say they do not know how they will get by.
“I’m very upset. I mean, you know, I’m a 60-year-old man,” Senior Operator Frank Militscher said. “It’s hard to find work”
“I’m still kind of in shock,” Assistant Manager Sonya Smith said. “Coming this close to Christmas, I don’t know how I’m going to pay my rent. I don’t know how I’m going to do anything.”
But employees are not the only ones struggling with the closure.
“It certainly has created quite an upheaval today and quite a shuffle for us today,” Realty World Cape Fear Broker/Owner Harold Chappell said.
Chappell says he hopes a new company will take eshowings’s place soon. In the meantime, he says they are working hard to recover what they lost.
“We’re actually having to set up all those appointments manually ourselves and we’re having to go back and recreate some of that data because we relied on our vendor to keep that data,” Chappell said.
Kot has not returned our calls.
Employees say there are still many unanswered questions. They say they hope they can find new jobs soon.
