WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– UNCW head baseball coach Mark Scalf has announced that 13-year Major League veteran and World Series winner Tony Womack will be the featured speaker at the annual Spring Training Banquet set for Feb. 1, 2014. "It’s a pleasure to have Tony Womack as our featured speaker for the Spring Training Banquet,” said Scalf. “Tony worked his way to the major league level through dedication and hard work. He had a very successful career and helped teams win in any fashion he could.”

Womack played 13 seasons in the major leagues for seven teams including the Pittsburgh Pirates and Arizona Diamond Backs for five seasons apiece. While with the Diamond Backs, he helped the organization to their first World Series championship in 2001 against the New York Yankees. Womack also appeared in the 2004 Fall Classic with the Cardinals.

Womack, a native of Danville, Va., played collegiately at Guilford College before being selected by Pittsburgh in the 1991 MLB amateur draft. He reached the major league level for good in 1997 and led the National League in stolen bases for the next three seasons, including a career-high 72 in 1999 with Arizona. In 2000, Womack led the senior circuit with 14 triples. He played in the postseason on five occasions.
The banquet will be held on campus at the Burney Center. There will be a cocktail hour beginning at 5 p.m. followed by the banquet festivities at 6 p.m.
