WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man charged with DWI in a crash that killed one of his passengers last night has been convicted of drunk driving before.

The New Hanover County Clerk of Court’s office says Mark William Neil Estep, 39, has had two DWI charges in the past six years in New Hanover County with the most recent one claiming the life of one of his friends.

Wilmington Police say Thursday evening Estep was driving under the influence when he failed to yield the right of way to a Jeep pulling into the Food Lion parking lot at Carolina Beach Road and Independence Blvd.

Estep’s Blazer flipped over killing John Jackson Jr., 53, who was riding in the front seat.

Estep appeared in court today on charges of felony death by motor vehicle, DWI and failure to yield. He is in the New Hanover Co. Jail under $30,000.

The Department of Corrections website shows Estep’s record includes multiple convictions each for drug possession, reckless driving, hit and run and driving while license revoked.

The accident report is out, and explains everything clearly.
Go to http://p2c.wilmingtonnc.gov/AccidentDetail.aspx and put mark estep in for first and last to read for yourself, but here’s the text:

*** Mark Estep is unit 1, the other driver is unit 2. ***

Investigation revealed Unit 1 was failed to yield right of way while turning left into a public driveway and pulled in the path of Unit 2, causing the collision.

The listed witnesses said that Unit 2 was traveling East on Independence Blvd when Unit 1 turned right in front of him. They both stated Unit 2 had no opportunity to avoid the collision.
Driver 2 said he was traveling East on Independence Blvd when Unit 1 pulled in front of him.

Driver 2 said he did not have time to react or avoid the collision and he struck Unit 1 in the passenger door.

Driver 1 said he was turning into the PVA of the shopping center and thought he had plenty of time. He entered the intersection and was struck by Unit 2.

The collision caused Unit 1 to overturn onto its driver`s (left) side and caused the death of the passenger.

Driver 1 was suspected of DWI and arrested for same.

I know him too not well but, well enough to believe he is still drinking or was until he was sentenced. I can’t understand why he married knowing he was going to jail was he hoping the judge would feel sorry for him with more then a dozen kids between them . The whole thing stinks. My heart goes out to the children.

You can blame this LOW LIFE dirtbag for that man’s death AND you can blame our judicial system for the multiple slaps on the wrist this dirtbag received and many others. Pathetic.
