WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The community joined together this weekend to decorate headstones at the Wilmington National Cemetery with wreaths in honor of fallen soldiers.
Wreaths Across America hosts the event every year. The organization encourages people from all over the country to remember the sacrifices our military makes by sponsoring a wreath.
This year, over 1,000 sponsored wreaths garnished the graves at the Wilmington National Cemetery.
Why so many?
"I think out of just pride, to be honest with you," said Deputy Commander for Cape Fear Civil Air Patrol Rick Paxton. "They really are happy that these folks have stood up for them at some point in the past.”
Organizers hope ceremonies like this one will teach our children about the freedoms we enjoy each day, and the cost of those freedoms.
