WINSTON-SALEM, NC (UNCW) — Junior Dearica Hamby posted game highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds to record her fifth straight double-double and lead Wake Forest to a 68-44 victory over UNCW in collegiate women’s basketball action Monday at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
The Demon Deacons improved to 6-4 overall with the victory while the Seahawks, facing their third Atlantic Coast Conference opponent this season, slipped to 1-9.
Hamby was 7-of-9 from the floor to spark a Demon Deacon attack that shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the floor for the contest. Redshirt freshman Kelila Atkinson was the only Wake Forest player to join Hamby in double figures as she finished with 14.
Junior Kelva Atkins tallied 13 points to lead UNCW, who shot a chilly 29.5 percent (18-of-61) from the field and just 4-of-18 (.222) from 3-point range for the game. Freshman Amber Reeves finished just shy of a double-double with season-highs of nine points and nine rebounds while freshman D’Asia Cain pulled down a season-high nine boards.
Holding a 20-18 lead midway through the first half, a layup by freshman Jill Brunori sparked Wake Forest to a 16-2 spurt that spanned just 2:39 and gave the Demon Deacons a 36-20 cushion with 4:01 remaining in the first half.
Leading 37-24 at the break, the Demon Deacons maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half, using a 16-4 run midway through the frame to build a 60-36 cushion with 6:23 remaining.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from the Seahawks temporarily halted Wake Forest’s momentum, but the Demon Deacons rattled off eight straight points to take their largest lead of the game, 68-42, with just over a minute remaining. A layup by freshman Johanna McMillan with 26 seconds on the clock determined the final 26-point margin.
UNCW returns to action Thursday when it hosts Liberty in an 11:30 a.m. matinee as part of “Seahawks Tomorrow.” Wake Forest is back on the court Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest against South Alabama.
DURHAM, NC (AP) – Freshman Jabari Parker scored 21 points to help No. 8 Duke beat Gardner-Webb 85-66 on Monday night.
Andre Dawkins added a season-high 18 points for the Blue Devils (8-2), who were playing their first game in nearly two weeks. Duke’s offense came out strong and shot 50 percent with nine 3-pointers, maintaining a double-digit lead for most of the game even though they didn’t do a lot to slow the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ own hot shooting.
Duke led by 14 points at halftime and by 23 in the second half on the way to earning its 108th straight home nonconference victory.
Jerome Hill scored a career-high 22 points to go with nine rebounds to lead Gardner-Webb (6-6), which shot nearly 63 percent in the opening half before cooling off and finishing at 54 percent for the game.
