Brunswick County man charged with murder in Ash

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Three days after ruling the death of John Kusta as suspicious the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office has arrested another man from the Ash community for his murder.

Sheriff John Ingram say some time Friday night or Saturday morning Thomas Holland, 27, forced his way into Kusta's home to try and rob him. A fight broke out between the two, and a shot was fired from a .410 shotgun owned by Kusta. According to the sheriff it appears that the same gun was used by Holland to hit Kusta in the back of the head, which killed the 69-year-old.

Holland was already in custody for a number of break-ins in the area when he was charged with killing Kusta.

"The suspect frequently traveled through that area on his way to other locations in the community," Ingram said. "We think that this was a chance encounter, and that things certainly went south quickly."
