WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Commission Chair Woody White is considering a run for a much higher office.

White is expected to enter the race for the 7th District Congressional seat next year, but White told WWAY last night he will not make a formal announcement until January after GOP sources said the former state senator could make an announcement as soon as today. The Congressional seat has been held since 1997 by Democrat Mike McIntyre.

If he decides to run, White would face David Rouzer in May’s Republican primary. Rouzer narrowly lost to McIntyre last year in a contest that went to a recount.

McIntyre also faces a primary challenge from another New Hanover County Commissioner. Fellow Democrat Jonathan Barfield has said he will run.

  • Guest2020 says:

They all suck. I wish we had better choices.

  • Bill 1950 says:

McIntrye votes fairly conservatively on most issues. He is responsive to constituent input. I wish he would change allegiance to the GOP. His most disgraceful votes are when he votes for the Marxist demagogues of his party for leadership positions.

  • alsey gilbert says:

I am from Johnston was hoping someone other than Rouzer would run. I want someone other than a career politician to run, the same old people are not getting the job done. Please bring in someone new.

  • Vog46 says:

    Pantano is damaged goods.
Rouzer comes across as a country bumpkin and needs some polish. He shot himself in the foot several times during his last run.
Mike for his part plays the part of a conservative Dem quite well.
Unless the GOP comes up with someone else, I am tempted to vote for McIntyre.

  • Erlkoenig says:

Why all the hatred? He’s barely announced anything and you guys are jumping all over him.

Let him run and make his case. He may very well beat Slackentyre another gutless Washington politician.

  • TeaParty2014 says:

I really hope Woody doesn’t run, I’m already going to have my hands full in the GOP NC US Senate Primary.

A New Hanover County Republican Party Precient Chair

PS. David Rouzer is my guy, although I like Pantano a LOT!

  • Dennis Sayer says:

That would be Par. I think White would fit right in very comfortably. But, that is the whole problem, isn’t it.

  • Rick Wilson says:

I think he should forget about Congress and run for President. With Brian Berger as his running mate, it would be a can’t miss ticket. Think of all the stories……….

  • Vog46 says:

since the districts have been redrawn McIntyre has struggled to win. Rouzer is not a great candidate but at least got to a recount against McIntyre.
If there’s a primary fight between Rouzer and White BOTH lose as it will take too much money from both campaigns.
But Tom you are right – put Woody under a microscope and this could get very interesting very quickly.

Is Mike Officially running for re-election? THAT would change everything….

  • SurfCityTom says:

    for re-election.

But, don’t forget he faces Barfield in the primary. If Barfield stumbles during any joint, public appearance, Mike could be flattened; and that would change the dynamics.

  • RaDonna Marshall says:

Pantano is in a very good job to serve NC veterans. Campaigning while doing his job would not be a good idea since he just filled the position this year. Stay put please.

  • guesty says:

    BARField is a democrat.

  • tseug says:

“The Great American Vending Machine has two great options for you to pick from:
Would you like 6 gumballs for a dollar, or a half-dozen gumballs for 4 quarters?
The choice is yours! We’re all about choice here in the American democracy!”…..author unknown

  • GuestMan. says:

McIntyre is supposed to be a Democrat.

  • Erlkoenig says:

Great. More good choices within the Republican ranks. Slackentyre, Barfield …. well…

  • SurfCityTom says:

be interesting. At the very least, should provide just cause for an investigative reporter to undertake a deep background check on Woody. And perhaps a sound thrashing at the polls would send him scurrying for a burrow.

As an attorney, he does possess the ego to cause him to feel he can overcome all obstacles in his path to higher glory.

  • Rick Wilson says:

Woody White must be delusional. His performance on the County Commission is laughable except for all of the taxpayer money he has wasted. If memory serves me, he was appointed to fill out a State Senate term and as a sitting State Senator lost his re-election bid against Julia Boseman. His negative campaign cost him dearly, and the sour grapes after the loss were classless. He will not defeat Rouser in a primary, much less McIntyre in a general election. If Pantano chooses to run again, it will make for an interesting primary; maybe one of the local networks will show reruns of “The Three Stooges” so real time comparisons can be made……….

  • Guest1118 says:

Ilario Pantano is with the McCrory administration in the Dept of Veteran’s Affairs. He’s not running.

  • 9743 says:

Please Woody, “Say it ain’t so!!

  • nc tax payer says:

what a joke. why not vote for brain berger . they both are a joke

  • GuestMan. says:

Oh God, please don’t let it be real…

  • ChefnSurf says:

    - “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the best-est person ever person to run for Congress of all?”
    – “Why Woody, that would be you of course!”
    – “Oh thank you magic mirror. That’s what I thought too!”

Yo Woody ….. That mirror’s just messing with you, you idiot. Run for Congress and you’ll wind up with so much egg on your face you’ll need a second head just to help you carry some of it.

On another note: If Barfield’s still considering a run, he must have had another personal visit from God to assure him that even if he doesn’t have the financing, God will loan him the money.

Looks like all the crazies are trying to escape the asylum.

  • Rick Wilson says:

@ Chef; Great post…..I just have one difference of opinion…..Mr. White’s current head is plenty big to accommodate all of the egg he will so justly deserve.

  • guest111 says:

Based on wasteful spending and the attitude of all the commissioners I would never vote for White and dang sure won’t vote Barfield. We know how they think and I’ve had enough of both of them. These peons get in office around Wilmington and the power goes straight to their heads. Good Lord. . is Berger running for governor?
