WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Today is the final day to make donations you can write off on your 2013 tax return.

Matthew Tidman with the Salvation Army says the holidays are a time for giving and sharing. He says there are lots of needy families in the Port City that may not have been blessed with a happy Christmas. But luckily he says New Year’s Eve is one of the charity’s busiest days to collect what these families really need.

“All of the stuff that we get is wonderful, because we use it to help people,” Tidman said. “The clothing that is given, the coats that are given, we give those out regularly to people that come in that need something to help them out, and without the help of the community, we couldn’t do that.”

Tidman says the donations they could really use right now are furniture and kitchen appliances.
