WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Getting in shape is among the top New Year's resolutions nationwide, but often times this popular goal is a hard one to keep.
Many gyms are offering incentives like membership discounts or programs to get people in the door.
"I just wanted to get in shape and came to Planet Fitness," Eli Alvarez said. "I liked it and started to see gains and everything, and I started to look better and feel better, so I decided to keep coming."
Alvarez has already been working out for several weeks, but says his New Year's resolution is to continue to slim down and build more muscle.
"The way I see it is if you really want to do it and you're motivated, and once you start seeing the differences it's easier and easier to keep coming back," he said.
Planet Fitness has seen an increase in gym memberships over the past several weeks. Stephanie Bise is a personal trainer. She says people are looking to lose weight and tone up.
"I guess people put on those extra pounds during Thanksgiving and the Christmas season," Bise said.
Bise says in order to stick with your New Year's resolution, it's important to ease into it. She says people sometimes get discouraged because results typically take weeks to show up.
"I just tell them that they need to stick with it," she said. "It might take a month or two to start seeing changes. It's not going to come off so easy and so fast. You just got to stick with it and don't get your hopes up."
Trainers at Planet Fitness say once the warm weather comes in the spring, they will see a little bit of a decline in the number of people coming in.
