Teen charged with kidnapping his grandfather

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A New Hanover County teen has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping his own grandfather.

The Sheriff's Office says late last night Tyler Balcombe, 18, asked his grandfather Robert Covil for a ride to pick up a friend in the Castle Hayne area. Balcombe could not find his friend and became agitated, investigators say. Covil became concerned and put his hand on his 9 mm pistol he keeps in the vehicle. That's when deputies say Balcombe lunged for the weapon and wrestled it away from his grandfather and said, "Papa, you're going where I tell you!"

The Sheriff's Office says Balcombe instructed his grandfather to drive to Leland. On the way, investigators say Covil noticed he was behind a New Hanover County Sheriff's vehicle, so he flashed his lights a couple of times. Dep. G. McMillan quickly fell in behind Covil and pulled the car over to investigate calling Leland Police for help.

Investigators say once stopped Balcombe quickly surrendered. He is in jail under $25,000 secured bond charged with second-degree kidnapping and common law robbery, which are both felonies.

Covil was not injured and returned home.

How is it so easy for all of you to be the judge and jury. NONE of you know the circumstances in this case nor will you ever care enough to find them out. Don't be so quick to judge. One day, it may be your family member others are talking about.

He NEEDS to be in jail and stay in jail. Look at him! He looks crazy!

The glazed over look in his eyes and the arrogant smirk on his face clearly say that this criminal feels NO remorse for what he did.

The grandfather could have handled the situation differently. There's a lot more to this story than the simple telling above.

Robert Covil, the grandfather, lacks proper communication skills. Because he did not try to resolve the situation sensibly on his own, his grandson is now shamed with a criminal record and it will follow him all of his life. He has, in fact, destroyed his grandson's future.

Families who lack the ability to communicate properly always rely on the "law" to settle things.

I would like to see how you communicate with a family member who is holding a gun on you. The grandfather did the right thing. The shame and record that the grandson may receive fall's on his head and his head alone. He chose to take the gun. He chose to force his grandfather to do his bidding. If the grandfather had not alerted the officer, then we may be talking about a murder in addition to the kidnapping.

I'm pretty sure the grandson destroyed his own future with any of his many prior arrests. he's got quite an array of mugshots out there and he's only 18 years old.

TYLER BALCOMBE HAS AN EXTENSIVE CRIMINAL HISTORY BEFORE THIS INCIDENT EVER TOOK PLACE. GARY DID NOT CREATE ONE FOR HIM BY FLASHING DOWN THE COP. HIS CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR IS OUT OF CONTROL. GARY MAY PUT ON A TOUGH ACT BUT HE WILL BE QUICK TO THROW ANYONE UNDER THE BUS TO SAVE HIS OWN SELF WHEN HE FEELS THREATENED.

Jackson, you must be sitting on your brain. This punk took his grand dad's gun. He was armed, and probably nuts, as well. He is right where he belongs, in jail and hopefully will stay there for a long while. If he would do this to a family member, what would he do to a stranger? Maybe you should shuttle him and his pals around from now on.

If the old man had a gun...wait, he did. IF the punk kid had a gun he wouldn't have had to take his grandpa's! See, more guns are the ANSWER TO EVERY CRIME!
