Leland murder suspect arrested after chase in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A man wanted for murder in Leland is in custody, but not before investigators say he was part of an almost six-mile long car chase this morning in Wilmington.

"He tried to help any and everybody he could. If he had it you had it," Budd Cleaveland said about his cousin Jason Anderson, who was shot and killed early Monday morning.

Cleaveland says Anderson was letting James Ketchum and Calron Williams live with him at his home in Leland. Cleaveland says when Anderson asked the men for rent money, they turned to crime to get it by robbing a store. He says when Anderson learned what happened, he kicked the men out, but after they saw Anderson talking to the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, they dubbed him a snitch. Leland Police say Ketchum shot Anderson early Monday morning.

"That man didn't expect to die that night," Cleaveland said. "He was doing the right thing."

Wednesday members of the Eastern North Carolina Violent Fugitive Task Force were in unmarked cars waiting for back-up at the Howard Johnson on Market Street when they say Ketchum and Williams left the motel and drove off in a blue sedan. Williams hit a median on S. College Rd, which spun the car that landed in a ditch.

Investigators say before the car stopped, the men jumped out and ran into the woods near College Road Animal Hospital.

"I heard some wrestling in the bushes and this officer yells, 'Stop or I'll shoot,' and I got scared," said Kiernan Wesson, who works at the animal hospital. "I came inside and told everyone to lock the doors."

Officers say when they chased the two men through the woods they surrendered.

Ketchum is charged with first degree murder. He and Williams are charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon. Investigators say that robbery happened Saturday.

Jason was my life and my world he was a wonderful boyfriend and a great man all together he would have done anything for anybody he could have and that's what he was doing for "jimmy" so if hope jimmy dies in jail from getting life...cuz he tore my life apart and a lot of other loved ones..R.I.P baby love u until we meet again.

so how about "jimmy" states he is not a cold blooded killer, then what kind of killer is he? also in his words he says "it is not what it looks like", of course he is going to say that to save his a$$. point being we all need to remember Jason and be supportive for the family and friends. I hope this jimmy punk gets some type of death!!! R.I.P. BIG HOMMIE

I think everyone has a soul, and we should pray for him.

YES WE SHOULD PRAY FOR HIM AND I MEAN THAT THE POLICE KEEP HIM SAFE FROM THE OTHER PRISONERS AND KEEP HIM IN THE HOLE! HAHA!!! JUST LAUGHING MY TAIL OFF BC I HOPE AND PRAY THAT THE JUDGE GIVES HIM THE DEATH PENALTY AND TORTURE HIM JUST LIKE HE DID TO MY COUSIN JASON ANDERSON R.I.P JAY

MY CAPS LOCK IS STUCK AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. Oh, all I had to do was press it again. Never mind.

Whew....you mean to say the police didn't shoot to kill first...wow...hopefully going forward we can start seeing more justice being served instead of the police taking lives.

I bet the reason they are both in jail instead of on a slab is that, despite trying to get away initially, they realized they were caught, and followed instructions given by the cops. Maybe they actually watch the news and understand that the cops mean business.
There's no "because he was white" here because in fact we had both a white guy, and a black guy do exactly the same thing, and both are still in great condition to stand trial, and likely get released by the DA after virtually no time served.

i am SOOOOO glad that they caught the idiot that killed my cousin. R.I.P. JAY!!! hope that that idiot gets what he deserves in prison bc i know he will bc Jay knew ALOT of people.

God is good. I am so glad he is in jail and I honsetly hope he rots there.

I am so thankful that both of Jason's murderers have been caught! They can no longer hurt anybody else. Thank you Jason for guiding the police to them! Rest in peace now big guy!
