WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man wanted for murder in Leland is in custody, but not before investigators say he was part of an almost six-mile long car chase this morning in Wilmington.

“He tried to help any and everybody he could. If he had it you had it,” Budd Cleaveland said about his cousin Jason Anderson, who was shot and killed early Monday morning.

Cleaveland says Anderson was letting James Ketchum and Calron Williams live with him at his home in Leland. Cleaveland says when Anderson asked the men for rent money, they turned to crime to get it by robbing a store. He says when Anderson learned what happened, he kicked the men out, but after they saw Anderson talking to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, they dubbed him a snitch. Leland Police say Ketchum shot Anderson early Monday morning.

“That man didn’t expect to die that night,” Cleaveland said. “He was doing the right thing.”

Wednesday members of the Eastern North Carolina Violent Fugitive Task Force were in unmarked cars waiting for back-up at the Howard Johnson on Market Street when they say Ketchum and Williams left the motel and drove off in a blue sedan. Williams hit a median on S. College Rd, which spun the car that landed in a ditch.

Investigators say before the car stopped, the men jumped out and ran into the woods near College Road Animal Hospital.

“I heard some wrestling in the bushes and this officer yells, ‘Stop or I’ll shoot,’ and I got scared,” said Kiernan Wesson, who works at the animal hospital. “I came inside and told everyone to lock the doors.”

Officers say when they chased the two men through the woods they surrendered.

Ketchum is charged with first degree murder. He and Williams are charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon. Investigators say that robbery happened Saturday.
