Carolina Beach changes rules for dogs on beach

Carolina Beach, NC (WWAY) -- Carolina Beach Town Council votes to ban dogs on the beach during summer season.

Tuesday evening council voted to ban dogs April 1st through September 30th.

Dogs are allowed on the beach from October 1st through the end of March, provided they are on a leash.

Freeman Park is still open to dogs but they must be on a leash during the summer season.

Town Council made the move to mirror Kure Beach laws.

Visited over the winter

Visited over the winter break. Most dog owners were considerate, but some people were allowing their dogs to run off-leash. As others have said, it's always a few who ruin it for others. Yep, saw plenty of cigarette butts, too. Sadly.

Dogs on Beach

We were looking for a change & thinking about the Wilmington area beaches but no longer. We will continue going to Myrtle Beach & Horry County SC where we can still take our dogs on the beach in the summer early mornings and evenings. We prefer to vacation in dog friendly areas.

Oak Island is one of the

Oak Island is one of the most dog friendly beaches in North Carolina and you can definitely make a day trip to Wilmington. Love that area!

Banning dogs from Carolina Beach

In response to the person who suggested all dog owners boycott Carolina Beach: Please do! As a year round resident of Carolina Beach, and one of the few people who make it a habit to pick up trash from the beach, I take it as a personal affront to be walking on the beach and come upon piles of dog excrement. Between the dog piles, the cigarette butts, bloody bandages and beer cans, I stay busy winter and summer picking up other people's trash. And no, no one asked me to do this. I do it because Carolina Beach is my home and I like to take pride in my home. What a shame that dog owners, cigarette smokers and others cannot do the same.

Banning dogs from Carolina Beach

Dear Nancy, you have every right to be upset. As a dog owner, I was thrilled when I visited the cam site and saw people walking their dogs on the beach. We live in Charlotte and were looking forward to taking a day trip with our dogs. Sad to learn that we can't do that now. Not all dog owners are uncaring, we always pick up after our dog and keep them on a leash. Unfortunately, the folks that don't ruin it all for us. If I were in your shoes I would feel the same. If we lived in Carolina Beach my wife would probably join you in your efforts to clean up. She's always picking up trash and cleaning after inconsiderate people. We live on the river and it really bothers me when I see a piece of trash floating by. You seem like a nice person who cares about the environment she lives in.

utter B/S, all pet owners

utter B/S, all pet owners should boycott Carolina and Kure beach's, see how that goes over!

I own a home in Carolina Beach, and while some dog owners are responsible, too many low lifes let them run around and do whatever. Don't need that at the beach so good law.

If pet owners would just be

If pet owners would just be courteous, then these rules wouldn't be necessary.

Please do feel free to boycott

I'm sure that there's a beach somewhere on the east coast with enough doggy leavings on it and mixed into it to make you feel right at home.

Looks like this problem will fix itself one boycotter at a time. Great idea!

Let's also include some

Let's also include some provision to make sure parents clean up behind their kids, things like candy wrappers, pop cans and crappy diapers.
