Carolina Beach, NC (WWAY) — Freeman Park could get a Hatteras Ramp to help vehicles get on and off the beach.

Tuesday night Carolina Beach Town Council voted to start accepting bids on the project that, according to council, wouldn’t cost more than 104 thousand dollars.

The ramp would make it easier for vehicles to drive on the beach without getting stuck and would be built at the entrance to the park.

The South end is a state park that doesn’t allow alcohol, camping or campfires.

Freeman Park is not the only 4wd access for Pleasure Island! Fort Fisher State Recreation Area on Loggerhead Road offers annual and day passes for $50 and $12 and has almost 5 miles of 4wd beach!

This should have been done years ago!

  • TIGERCAT says:

Its about time you learned how to drive on the beach. Mud tires with 60 psi dont cut it on the beach

  • Progressive Hater says:

What a fantastic idea! Spend 104K on a ramp to help losers who don’t know how to drive their 4WD on sand! So unless these morons are going to pave the whole beach then the non-drivers are just going to get stuck somewhere else on the beach. And where will this money come from????? Yep, you guessed it…higher fees! Get ready for $150 or $200 a year for the beach pass.

If they get stuck somewhere else, it’s their problem and they can call for, and pay for a tow. If they get stuck right by the narrow entrance/exit area it blocks others either coming or going and on busy days even backs up Canal Drive.

It’s really not about helping the morons (and there are lots of them). It’s about helping everyone else deal with the morons.

This is just a waste of money. I have had many 4 wheel drive vehicles
and been on the north end hundreds of times and never got stuck.
When i plan to go beach riding or fishing on either end of the beaches
I go prepared, lower the tire pressures to 20-25 lbs and you wont get stuck in the sand

  • Progressive Hater says:

So then what you are saying is that you are more than happy to pay more in taxes and fees? You sound like part of the crowd that thought the “road diet” was a great idea! What a moronic waste of money that was!

I grew up here and have been driving on the north end for over 20 years. The entrance to the beach does get very soft and deep during high traffic times. I got stuck last year in a 4×4 f150 on 33 inch tires when I had to stop 50 feet in for the tow truck that was stuck. Air down the tires and I was out in 2 minutes. Was it a hassel? Yes. Is it worth 100 grand, and higher fees? No! Know you vehicle’s limits, know you own. Air down you tire’s. (I didn’t) so it was partly my own fault. Don’t waste more town money.

It’s amazing how much taxpayers have to shell out because a handful of people are too stupid to do things properly.
