WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police say gangs may be involved after shots were fired at three Wilmington homes early this morning while people were inside.

“We do not believe they are random shootings,” WPD spokeswoman Linda Rawley said.

Two homes were hit just before 12:30 a.m. in the 400 block of S. 14th Street, where police say officers first heard the gunfire while patrolling in the area. ShotSpotter picked up the shots, which led them to two homes damaged by bullets and several shell casings nearby. Police say though people were inside the homes hit at the time of the shooting, no one was hurt.

“We want folks to understand that we do not believe there is someone just riding around just shooting, but we do believe they are specific and deliberate and that they are targeted,” Rawley said.

Around 3:35 a.m., a woman called 911 to report she had heard shots outside her home at 417 Clay Street about 40 minutes earlier. Police found nine shell casings outside the home and one bullet inside. They say the house had been hit multiple times. A police spokeswoman says the woman who lived at the house had no real reason for why she had waited to call.
