Cold may have delayed schools, flights, but some workers keep going

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Last night's winter storm did not have quite the punch some feared.

There was very little snow in the area overnight, but the threat of cold delayed many schools this morning. But while kids got a break, there are some folks who cannot avoid Jack Frost's chill.

"Bout the first 30 minutes, an hour, it's painful. Eventually, you go numb," said Bobby Thigpen, quality control manager for the construction team working to build the new Fine Arts Building at CFCC's downtown campus.

For them, avoiding the cold is nearly impossible.

"Some of the southern boys like to complain about it a little more, but we're all doing our jobs, we're all getting it done," one worker told us

You probably felt the cold today on your way to work, but how do you prepare yourself when your office is the top of the steel skeleton of a building under construction?

"Just layer up!" said one worker, who was wearing five layers.

As temperatures plummet, these workers continue laboring. Some say they actually prefer working in these frigid conditions; that is over what they'll be facing in a few short months: the heat.

The nature of construction requires constant movement, which they say helps keep them warm.

"If you're moving around the body gets heat, so that is the only way," Alfredo Alenan. "The boss likes it, because we're doing more."

So while you're office adjusts the thermostat, these guys continue working right alongside Mother Nature.

Despite the extreme cold today and other times this winter, crews say work on the building remains on schedule.
