WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — Even though violent crimes ticked upward in Wilmington in 2013, a decrease in crime throughout downtown meant Part I crimes – including violent and property crimes – fell 3 percent in 2013, Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous told Wilmington City Council on Tuesday.

In 2013, there were 6,249 Part I crimes, down from 6,411 in 2012, a year that included a temporary annexation of Monkey Junction which officials attributed as the cause for a slight rise in some crime statistics.

Violent crimes did jump upward in 2013, though, with particular gains in the number of rapes and the number of aggravated assaults.
