WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Greenfield Lake is one of Wilmington's natural gems. Keeping the water clean and helping wildlife thrive is one of the city's main goals.
That's why the city restocked the lake with 800 sterile carp today. They will help fight the algae and underwater vegetation that lower the oxygen content and kill fish in the lake.
"The lake would just get more and more polluted," city spokeswoman Malissa Talbert said. "Not only does the lake serve as a reservoir for the greenfield lake watershed, which means water drains from a very large area into this lake, but greenfield lake is home to the city's largest park."
The city is also installing aeration systems to increase water circulation and combat the algae.
