HEMPSTEAD, NY (UNCW) — Senior guard Annie Payton tallied a game-high 18 points to lead Hofstra to a 55-43 victory over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball action Friday at the Mack Sports Complex.

The Pride improved to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in CAA action as it swept the season series from the Seahawks, who moved to 3-18 and 2-5 with the setback.
Payton was 7-of-9 from the floor to pace a Hofstra lineup that shot just 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the floor for the contest, including a 7-of-24 (.292) effort from the field in the second half. Sophomore Jakelle King-Gilchrist joined Payton in double figures with 11 points while senior Anma Onyeuku chipped in nine.

Reigning CAA Rookie-of-the-Week Ryan Flowers matched her season high with 17 points and added eight rebounds to lead UNCW, who was a frigid 13-for-40 from the field (.325) for the game. Fellow newcomer Naqiayyah Teague pitched in eight points and added six rebounds while freshman Brie Mobley added six points and a team-high four assists.

Holding a 28-24 lead early in the second half, Payton knocked down two 3-pointers and a pair free throws over a six-minute span to key a 16-4 spurt and give the Pride its largest lead of the game, 44-28, with 10:30 remaining.

Hofstra held a 48-33 lead with just over under seven minutes left to play when a jumper from the from the free-throw line by Mobley started an 8-1 stretch that pulled the Seahawks within eight, 49-41. The Pride kept the Seahawks from getting any closer, tallying five of the last seven points of the game to determine the final 12-point margin.

Hofstra built a 28-22 lead in the first half, capitalizing on an 18-5 run in the first half that lasted just over eight minutes and saw the Seahawks make just one of their eight field goal attempts during the spurt.

Both teams return to action Sunday with road contests. UNCW travels to Northeastern while Hofstra is at Drexel. Tip off for both contests is set for 2 p.m.
