Weather changes, age a bad mix for CFPUA's pipes

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority has been busy the last day dealing with seven water main breaks.

CFPUA spokesman Mike McGill says the weather and the aging infrastructure are to blame. He says the pipes that are having problems are upwards of 70 years old, but seeing so many breaks is typical for this time of year.

"We also have in mind the customers; the fact that this is a major inconvenience for our customers, and so we do our best to to get things fixed as quickly as possible," McGill said.

McGill says last week's cold followed by a quick warm-up shocks the old pipes and leads to breaks.

While crews fix the break on Merestone Drive in Wilmington, there is a boil water advisory in effect.
