WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) – February in Wrightsville Beach can generally be a slow winter month, but one man quickly changed all of that with a joy-ride around the island.

After receiving multiple calls about a reckless driver Wrightsville Beach Police made a rare decision to raise the bridge and stop traffic on and off the island.

Chief Dan House says after multiple calls officers spotted Anthony Archer driving his white Range Rover recklessly, but could not catch him.

They later found the car with open containers, pill bottles, and marijuana.

Archer was found a short time later near Loggerheads.

Chief House says the decision to raise the bridge wasn’t one they took lightly.

“There was potential for danger,” said Chief Dan House. “We had the bridge crew say that vehicle had come through at a high rate of speed, and almost hit one of the workers. We were really concerned for the people’s safety not only here, but in Wilmington, so the best thing we could do was pull the bridge up that way we could contain him.”

Archer was cited for the open container and marijuana and taken to the hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Chief House says that Archer could face more charges after his psychiatric evaluation is complete.

Don’t worry fella! Suspended sentence is all you’ll get, just like Brian! The DA will drop any felony charge and you’ll be treated just like everyone else! We like DUI’s here in SE NC.

GuestAMotion, I can certainly see how you can come to that conclusion. Sad, but I can believe it. Sigh…

Seize the Range Rover and convert it to WBPD use. If Archer is found mentally unfit to stand trial, revoke his license. Stop being lenient on dangerous (impaired) drivers.
