CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) - Michael Jordan's Bobcats set an NBA record for futility two years ago. Now, they're talking playoffs - albeit in a watered-down Eastern Conference.
The laughingstock of the league after a 7-59 season in 2011-12, the Bobcats' culture appears to be changing behind first-year head coach Steve Clifford and 6-foot-10 low post scoring threat Al Jefferson.
The Bobcats (22-28) have already surpassed last season's win total with 32 games still remaining. They have positioned themselves as the No. 8 seed in the East with a three-game cushion in the win column over the New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons.
Clifford says the postseason is "right there" for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats have only been to the postseason once - in 2010, and were swept in four games by Orlando.

GREENVILLE, NC (AP) - John Bohannon scored 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Texas-El Paso pulled away from East Carolina in a 58-47 win Thursday night.
UTEP (17-6, 7-1 Conference USA) took the lead on a 12-2 run sparked by a C.J. Cooper 3-pointer to close out the first half with a 27-18 advantage. The conference leading Miners never trailed again after that.
Cooper ended the game with 15 points and Julian Washburn had 14 for UTEP, which shot 52 percent from the field to win its third straight conference road game for the first time since the 1993-94 season. Cedrick Lang had 10 rebounds.
East Carolina (12-11, 1-7) was led by Akeem Richmond, who scored 20 points, including six 3-pointers to break his own school record for most 3s in a season with 106. Paris Roberts-Campbell added 12 points in the loss.
