WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The winter storm has grounded planes at Wilmington International Airport the past few days, but finally travelers are getting some relief.
With Valentine's Day around the corner, this is usually a busy week at ILM as travelers come in and out to see their loved ones, but that has not been so easy since the winter weather hit.
ILM has had 25 outgoing flights cancelled since the ice hit Tuesday.
Today flights are headed out of town, but only if you are flying through Atlanta. The 5:55 p.m. flight to Atlanta is the only commercial flight going out today, and two flights from Atlanta at 8:20 p.m. and 10:25 p.m. are the only flights scheduled to arrive.
People flying to and from Wilmington out of hubs in Charlotte and Washington haven't been as lucky.
"It's weird, but I was hoping it would get cancelled because this was a short trip home for me," traveler Dean Morris said. "I checked the schedule this morning, and the flight number I was looking at, 4955, said cancelled."
ILM Deputy Director Julie Wilsey says the airlines have been trying to accommodate travelers who have had their flights cancelled and hope to have everyone to their final destination by the weekend.
