NC, local elections boards closed due to storm

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Candidates for state or local office may have to wait a little longer to officially file for office while a winter storm lingers in North Carolina.

The State Board of Elections office in Raleigh remained closed Thursday after closing at midday Wednesday. People could not file in person for positions ranging from the U.S. Senate and Congress to the state Supreme Court.

State elections executive director Kim Strach says many county board offices were also closed Thursday. That's where people file for the General Assembly and local positions.

The candidate filing period for this year began Monday and ends Feb. 28. Strach says the board could consider filing changes if there is bad weather closer to the deadline. Candidates also can file through the mail.
