WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Without a word of discussion, Wilmington’s Buck Hardee Field got one step closer to getting a makeover this morning.
Among the items on the consent agenda for the New Hanover County Commission meeting was a measure for the county to pitch in more than $53,000 toward new backstop netting, a new scoreboard, expanded press box and replacement of some seats, seat backs and grandstand fencing at the ballpark that is part of the Legion Stadium complex.
The estimated cost of the project is $325,000. According to the commission’s agenda, Carolina Beach Baseball, LLC, which recently bought the Wilmington Sharks, the stadium’s primary tenant during its summer league baseball season, has agreed to pay for about half the cost. The county, the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County Schools would split the rest at $53,641 each. New Hanover High School’s baseball team also uses the ballpark.
No word yet when the school board will discuss committing to the project. A city spokeswoman says council may talk about it at tomorrow night’s council meeting.
