WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s budget season, and the New Hanover County ABC Board is looking for ways to save money.

Director Dan Sykes says one proposal on the table would have the board cut the $180,000 it gives to a joint task force meant to cut down crime downtown. That would mean three officers could have their positions cut if that money is not made up somewhere else.

“We are concerned about the possible funding cuts to our joint law enforcement effort,” Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said in a statement. “We have made tremendous strides in reducing crime in the downtown community. We appreciate this partnership and hope to continue working with the sheriff’s department on this effort.”

Sykes says the money would go back into the ABC Board’s general fund and distributed back to municipalities.
