WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington City Council approved funds for the Wilmington Police Department’s Gang Investigative Unit at Tuesday evening’s meeting.

The department will be able to buy equipment for the Unit. The $33,145.00 will help gather intelligence about local gang activity.

The newly formed Gang Investigative Unit is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to decrease gang and gun violence in Wilmington.

Read the fine print! None of these funds are actually going to anything remotely associated with the Gang Unit.

    To the City Council,
When are you going to wake up and learn that throwing money at a problem just doesn’t work anymore. YOU have got to get out there on the streets and do some work of your own. We did the Gang Investigative Unit back in the late 90’s and the early 2000’s with the City/County Gang Intervention Unit. What happen to those investigators? They were absorbed into the different departments when they collected all of the information needed to combat the problem then. They did such a good job that the powers to be just thought they had solved the problem but guess what the cancer was alreadu growing and they couldn’t stop it because the politicians stood up on their podiums and declared the problem was gone but there again they were wrong because they didn’t do their work either. Now comes the 2014′ City Council. They want Law Enforcement to do their job for them again but take the credit. Saffo and his group of self back slappers will have to count on others to do their dirty work for them. Oh well, “Here we go again”!!!!!

This program was successful in the past in reducing gang violence and related crimes. When and why were these resources cut? Good to see the department bringing back an effective proactive approach.
