COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Whiteville woman is more than $100,000 richer after stopping for gas Friday night.

According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, Barbara Hall stopped at the Wilco on South Madison Street in Whiteville and bought a $5 ticket in the Green & Gold game that wound up hitting the top prize of $150,000.

“The store clerk heard I was excited,” Hall said. “She said, ‘Oh, my God, you’re a big winner!’ I said, ‘I am.'”

After taxes Hall wins $103,801. Hall told the NCEL she would pay off what she owes on her house and land and that she always planned to travel if she won the lottery.

Or I guarantee you will be broke within a year. Friends and family will come out of the woodwork and give you sad stories. And you will be tempted to help. Invest the money and spend the dividends. I am not a money manager but I assure you that unless you have someone supervise it, you will be broke and you will have no friends. They will avoid you to keep from paying you. The others will hate you for helping the others and not them.

Sock it away until you consult with someone who can assist you in investing the money. Let it work for you. It is not a fortune but it will bring out people you haven’t seen for years wanting a handout. Then your money and your friends will be gone forever.

I am in a position to know of what I speak. I turned away the sad sacks and invested it. Still have all my friends whom I politely told that it would be invested and wasn’t to be diverted to any other use. The pouts didn’t last long.
