Teacher of the Week: Shari Peacock

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- When our camera arrived to surprise Blair Elementary third grade teacher Shari Peacock, her students burst into a chant, "Miss Peacock! Miss Peacock! Miss Peacock!"

Once the excitement died down, Peacock explained that she puts hours each day into preparing lessons for her classroom, but said all of the hard work always pays off. "They're reaching that age of independence and I like watching them learn how to use it."

Peacock has been teaching for 19 years and said third grade is perfect for her. "They already know how to tie their shoes," she laughed. "Most of them. So I don't spend a lot of time doing those kinds of things but they still love me and I get hugs every single day."

She values the relationships she builds with students. In fact, next month she'll meet up with several former students who are now seniors in high school to have their own private celebration before the students walk in a formal graduation ceremony.

It is not uncommon for Peacock to keep in touch with adults who once sat in her classroom, "It's a nice feeling. It really is," she smiled.

The bond she shares with students is priceless and she hopes her current class will always remember, as well as an important lesson: "I want them to take with them that feeling on the inside that you are the best at everything you do every single day and even when things are hard, there's somebody there to help you. All you have to do is ask."
